Wikipedia Says No to Generative AI (Well, Almost)
In a context where artificial intelligence is seeping into everything, Wikipedia has decided to draw a clear line. The famous collaborative encyclopedia has just adopted a new editorial policy banning content entirely generated by AI, while allowing very controlled use of these tools for minor tasks.
The Rules of the Game
Concretely, contributors can no longer dump text generated by ChatGPT or its cousins directly into articles. It’s a strong message sent to enthusiastic (or lazy) users who might have thought they could speed up their contribution in three clicks.
However, the encyclopedia hasn’t become technophobic. It accepts that AI can assist writers for very specific, controlled tasks: limited grammar correction, minor style improvements, spell-checking. In short, AI as a standard writing assistant, not as an editor-in-chief.
Why This Caution?
The decision reflects legitimate concerns about quality and reliability. AI models, as amusing and practical as they are, sometimes generate falsehoods with the same confidence as established facts. On Wikipedia, where accuracy is paramount, that’s an unacceptable risk.
There’s also the question of copyright and transparency. Human contributors must remain accountable for what they write. It’s hard to take responsibility for content you’ve left entirely to a machine.

While the rest of the web gets excited about generating content in bulk with AI (result: articles written by robots, for robots), Wikipedia prefers to stay true to its DNA: a resource built collectively by humans who know their subjects.

This position illustrates a larger debate: how do you integrate AI without sacrificing quality and trust? Wikipedia offers a pragmatic answer—neither technophobic nor naive.
